Bruin BUD-E (2002-2003)

The Bruin Bud-E was designed for the Cessna and Office of Naval Research's Design Build Fly competition. The 2002/2003 mission required an unmanned portable air vehicle be developed which is capable of performing three distinct missions. The aircraft has the option of flying with an attached cylindrical antenna, performing a payload drop, or simply flying laps.

The Bud-E was designed to be quickly assembled out of a 4 ft by 2 ft by 1 ft box. The two wings and the v-tail detach in order to accommodate this requirement. The landing gears also fold up. The packing arrangement can be seen right. |

The wings are being slid together in the picture left. The final step in the assembly would be turning the plane right side up and testing of control surfaces. Assembly of the Bud-E took about 1 minute total. |
